My Science Smoothie: Brassica Bromelain B-Vitamin Beverage
This blog post is a paid partnership with SEED, but as always, all opinions are my own.
After a pretty slow-paced year, life has picked up its speed and has quickly become a blur of events. With this faster-paced life, I have weeks where I find myself feeling more stressed, not getting enough sleep, and struggling to find balance. Therefore, it’s no surprise that during these crazier weeks, I also feel an array of symptoms like bloating, nausea, and moodiness. This feeling of uneasiness is because the effects of our speedy lives can have a negative effect on our gut microbiomes.
To keep healthy, I realized I needed to maintain a healthier gut. So, I’ve partnered with Seed to curate a Science Smoothie to show you that supporting our gut health and diversity of our gut microbiome is much easier than you think. My Pineapple Zing Smoothie, or better known as the Brassica Bromelain B-vitamin Beverage, is packed with some incredible dietary benefits like B-vitamins, bromelain, and vitamin C 🤓
There’s a Periodic Table of Microbiome-Friendly Foods that I used to develop this simple, easy recipe. Why? Recent studies have suggested that the “intestinal microbiome plays an important role in modulating the risk of several chronic diseases. It is now understood that diet plays a significant role in shaping the microbiome, with experiments showing that dietary alterations can induce large, temporary microbial shifts within 24 hours.” Emphasis on 24 hours – that blew my mind!
One way to support whole-body health, including gut health, is through diversifying the number of fruits and vegetables you consume in your diet. A smoothie is a great way to incorporate important-macro and micronutrients that contribute to a well-balanced diet and support the health of your microbiome. My Brassica Bromelain B-vitamin Beverage includes refreshing ingredients like avocado, pineapple, and kale. Half an avocado contains an assortment of B-vitamins like B9, B6, B3, B5, and B2. Pineapples contain a proteolytic enzyme called bromelain, which aids in digestion and has been recently studied for numerous therapeutic effects. Lastly, kale has vitamin C content that is much higher than in many other green vegetables, and it’s a great source of a micronutrient because the calcium from kale is highly bioavailable!
No matter what you suffer from, it all begins with a healthy gut at the end of the day. I want to thank Seed for educating me on the importance of microbiome-friendly foods and working with me to develop this Science Smoothie. Forget “Hot Girl Summer,” let’s get on the “Hot Gut Summer” train — LOL. I hope you all enjoy this smoothie recipe!
Brassica Bromelain B-vitamin Beverage Recipe:
- 1 heaping cup frozen Pineapple
- 1/4 cup mashed Avocado
- 1 tsp grated Ginger
- 1/4 cup chopped Kale
- 1 cup Coconut Water
Pro tip: You can keep avocado and kale prepped and frozen as well. Additionally to make this in bulk, you could freeze all of the measured out ingredients in an individually reusable freezer safe bag and then you just need to toss the contents it in a blender with the addition of coconut water each day! This makes grocery shopping efficient, and will minimize food waste!
